Last week I had the pleasure of being interviewed by the one and only Catherine from Gem Hunt: http://www.gemhunt.co/gemtalkblog/2016/8/6/gia-school-grad-the-clear-cut
In less than a year Gem Hunt has grown from an idea to an extremely successful jewelry blog and Instagram page with over 30k followers! Gem Hunt has created a forum for a community of jewelry lovers from around the world to connect and bond over gemstones and fine jewels. I got in touch with Catherine to learn a little more about jewelry blogging and how she turned her love of gems into Gem Hunt.
How did you start becoming involved in the Gem and Jewelry Industry?
After I got engaged (got my first major diamond ring) I became obsessed with diamonds and instagram. I found myself spending several hours a week on instagram just staring at rings and finding new designers. One night, I was like well if I am going to spend all this time staring at it - I might as well produce something. I also genuinely wanted to learn more about these designers I so admired!
So I just started Gem Hunt on a whim. I really didn’t know what it was going to be when I started it. I just knew I had the desired to learn more about the business, independent designers, and jewelry! So I just started asking questions and it went from there - Gem Hunt is actually only 7 months old! I think it has been really amazing how far it is has come in 7 months.
What made you start Gem Hunt?
I felt there was not a community around fine jewelry for me! At lot of the coverage about fine jewelry is more focused on either the high-end market or vintage styles. I wanted a place to go to learn about cool new designers and the their stories. I also think the “tone” around jewelry is really serious and I just wanted a place to go that was more friendly. I like say “Gem Hunt is your best friend who loves diamonds” because it’s true!
What is your favorite part about jewelry blogging?
I love meeting new people and learning about topic that I am truly interested in learning more about. Fine jewelry is a such a loving community of people. Everyone has been so welcome to me it has just been an absolute pleasure! The downside is I want everything I learn about!
What are your long term goals for your blog and career?
I want to make Gem Hunt as big as possible and create a huge community of people who love fine jewelry and diamonds like me! One part, I am particularly passionate about is the “real women, real jewelry” stories. I think there tends to be a lot of stigma around talking about fine jewelry and I really want to change that. I want to celebrate women who love fine jewelry and wear on an everyday basis. There is no reason women should be shy about it!
What advice would you give to other up and coming jewelry bloggers like myself?
Just keep writing. I actually hate writing but I like to say good things come from it. In the beginning, my writing was not half as a good as it is now, and I am sure in a year from now it will be even better. Just keep working at it until you find your voice and what is resonating with your reader. On the same note, don’t get discouraged just keep putting out content and you never know when a breakthrough will happen.
