What is A Culet?

Welcome to The Clear Cut Classroom where we take deep dives into all things diamonds (and jewelry).  💍 This week we're talking all about culets! Sometimes when looking at Old European cuts or Old Mine cuts you may notice a dot in the center of the stone. This is the culet! In other words, the “culet” of a diamond refers to the facet at its very bottom.

A culet is an extra facet at the point of a diamond. It was a cutting technique used pre-1940s and it is indicative of an antique diamond. When you see a culet on a diamond, it should be seen as charming; it is not a negative characteristic at all.

Since antique diamonds were not standardized in their cuts, culets can be found in a range of sizes. It is totally your preference if you like a culet in your diamond or not. Authentic antique diamonds will have this extra facet. They are neither good or bad--just a characteristic of antique diamonds!
